We are still at a standstill. Despite the flurry of diplomatic activity and the shuttle diplomacy that the region is witnessing, there is little tangible material with which to go ahead for convening the Annapolis summit in November or December. The United States seems adamant to see the summit take place at any cost, irrespective of the outcome. It is as though holding the summit were the most important thing - anything else comes later.

There are those who think that not much will come out of the summit, and thus there is no point in holding it in the first place. While I do not want to be pessimistic, I am of the opinion that neither side is fully ready yet. It is definitely wrong for the Palestinian side to enter into any binding agreement while its leadership is split. What we need right now is a domestic summit that brings all factions back into the fold. Once united, we can then face the outside world. The old adage “united we stand, divided we fall” cannot be more true.

In this issue we shed light on various aspects of the life of elderly people. The elderly in Palestine - as anywhere else in the world - often face many hardships that come with old age. In addition to physical problems such as memory loss, dementia, loss of hearing, and difficulty in moving about, there are the social problems such as poverty, lack of adequate housing, and lack of essential services. There are not enough old-age homes in which persons who are somewhat dependent can live in dignity.
